Listening to Colleagues
Around the World
These are uncertain times, indeed. In fact, downright scary for many people. And with good reason. . . see this breaking news from today's New York Times:
Economy Shed 159,000 Jobs in September

Given that I live in the middle of the financial services crisis here in NYC, I thought I'd reach out and take the pulse of colleagues here locally and around the world. It has generated some great conversation. With their permission, I would like to share some of their observations, personal feelings and advice. Welcome to the dialog!

Are Corporations Finally Waking Up?!
Numbers don't lie and the
numbers the
demographics have been showing us for the
past 10 years is that the number of US
workers ages 55-64 will grow by over 50% between now and 2010. In the
Federal Government alone 25% of the 2 million
people working are expected to leave over
the next 5 years. How many are leaving the private sector?
More importantly
.how
many are leaving
YOUR business???
Older workers typically hold
the keys to
institutional knowledge; they traditionally
enjoy lower turnover rates and bring good
experience and work ethic to the workplace.
Do you have the programs
in place to attract
this vibrant segment of the workforce
and
retain them?
One firm that recognized
this shift and the
value of the more mature worker is CIGNA
Healthcare. Back in the 1980's they
developed a program called "Encore"
which allowed retirees to come back to
work for a max of 80 hours per month
without jeopardizing their pension benefits.
CIGNA was also an early adaptor of flexible
work programs including telecommuting; job
sharing and compressed work weeks. They
clearly see the benefits of retaining
institutional knowledge and retaining a
skilled workforce.
The more mature worker is
healthier longer;
living longer; and generally loves the work
they did
.they just don't want to do it for as
many hours a day! Programs like these give
them flexibility and time; keeps their minds
active and engaged in the community of
work
which they have been engaged in
for decades.
A "WIN-WIN";
wouldn't you say??
How is your work force planning strategy
looking these days? Call me if I can help
you engage your workforce and more
successfully plan for the future.
